The aggressive coronavirus has been keeping its deadly mission in Bangladesh as usual even after two and a half months infecting 2,381 more people and killing 22 more individuals. With the updates, the number of total infections now stands at 49,532 and body count reaches 672.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the information on the COVID-19 situation at a media briefing in the capital on Monday.
Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of DGHS, spoke at the briefing as she has been doing of late and said, ''As many as 11,439 samples were tested in 52 authorized labs across the country in the past 24 hours. Of them, 2,381 were confirmed to be COVID-19 positive.''
Of the fresh 22 deaths, 19 were male and others female, she added and went on saying that 11 were from Dhaka division, eight from Chattogram, two from Sylhet and the other from Barishal division. As per age categories, one was between 21-30, eight between 41-50, four within 51-60, seven between 61-70 and the other two 71-80 years old.
Professor Nasima Sultana, who has been acting as DG of DGHS said, ''The death rate now stands at 1.36 percent while the recovery rate at 21.39 percent.''
As many as 816 more patients have made recoveries since Sunday taking the total number to 10,597. A total of 449 people were put on isolation in the past 24 hours, she added.
Coronavirus has spread to all 64 districts of the country. Many districts were put under lockdown for several weeks to contain the spread of the killer virus.
Meanwhile, public holidays ended on May 30 and the offices of the government, semi-government and autonomous bodies resumed on May 31. Shutdown imposed across the country following the outbreak of the virus also ended on May 31.
Bangladesh reported its first case of the virus on March 8 while the first death was recorded on March 18. The killer virus, which broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, has so far killed at least 374,400 people across the globe. It has infected more than 6,296,000 people in 213 countries and territories.
The US is the worst-hit country with at least 106,200 deaths and more than 1,839,000 infections. Brazil has the second highest number of infections with 514,000 cases. The country has so far counted at least 29,300 deaths.
The UK has recorded 38,400 deaths, the highest in Europe, followed by Italy with at least 33,400 casualties. France has lost at least 28,800 people followed by Spain with at least 27,100 casualties. Belgium has so far reported more than 9,400 deaths, followed by Germany with no fewer than 8,600 deaths while Iran has recorded at least 7,800 casualties.
Canada has lost at least 7,200 citizens followed by the Netherlands with at least 5,900 casualties. China, the epicenter of the virus, has so far recoded at least 4,600 deaths. India has recorded at least 5,400 deaths with more than 191,000 infections. Pakistan has so far counted 1,500 deaths and more than 72,000 infections. Sri Lanka has counted only 11 deaths and 1,639 infections.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the COVID-19 a pandemic. The outbreak of the virus has brought almost the entire world to an impasse.
