Police have arrested radical Islamist group Hefazat-E-Islam's joint secretary general Mamunul Haque. Tejgaon Deputy Police Commissioner Harun Ur Rashid informed that Mamunul Haque was arrested from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrassa in the capital's Mohammadpur. Mamunul Haque is a teacher of this madrassa.
Deputy Police Commissioner Harun Ur Rashid told media that Mamunul Haque was arrested over a subversion case filed in 2020 which was lodged with Mohammadpur Police Station. Harun Ur Rashid further said that there are many cases which have been so far filed against Hefazat-E-Islam for vandalizing government offices and attack on police personnel.
Deputy Police Commissioner Harun Ur Rashid stated that Mamunul Haque would be produced before court on Monday. Higher authorities would be consulted about applying for putting Mamunul Haque on remand, Harun Ur Rashid told journalists.
Mamunul Haque came into discussions in November last year by explicitly speaking against Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's sculptures.
Afterwards a sculpture of Bangabandhu was smashed in Kushtia. Mamunul Haque and Hefazat-E-Islam's Amir Mawlana Junaid Babunagari have been sued over denouncing Bangabandhu's sculptures and vandalism. Hefazat leaders and activists carried out violent demonstrations in March this year opposing the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Dhaka to participate in Bangabandhu's birth centenary and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence. Hefazat stalwarts vandalized government offices including police stations in Dhaka, Chittagong, Brahmanbaria and some other places.
Hefazat-E-Islam also clashed with law and order forces around the capital's Baitul Mukarram Mosque on 26 March this year. Later on Mamunul Haque was caught with a woman in a resort in Narayanganj whom he claimed to be his second wife. Besides Mamunul Haque, some other senior leaders of Hefazat-E-Islam have been meanwhile arrested for conducting violence in different places.
