Bangladesh government has decided to extend the ongoing countrywide lockdown till 16 May in a bid to resist the contagion of Covid 19. Eid Ul Fitr will be celebrated on May 13 or 14. So, the Eid holidays are also being covered by the lockdown.
Bangladesh had lockdown last year too during Eid Ul Fitr. Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam has informed that trains and launches will remain suspended during the lockdown. Khandaker Anwarul Islam gave this information while speaking to journalists after a Cabinet meeting.Khandaker Anwarul Islam further said that public transports will be allowed run inside districts during the lockdown. However, buses, trains and launches from one district to another will not run at that time including the Eid holidays.
Eid Ul Fitr is the biggest religious festival in Bangladesh. There are at least three days public holidays on this occasion. Most of the people leave big cities to reach their village homes at this time.The Cabinet Secretary told journalists that readymade garments have been asked to grant no more than three days leave to their workers during the Eid Ul Fitr holidays so that they do not rush to their village homes.
A lot of people are gathering in the shopping malls of Dhaka city for Eid shopping. Allegedly health code is not being properly followed by people who are visiting shopping malls.According to Khandaker Anwarul Islam, from now on police will strictly monitor the movement of people around markets and shopping malls. It may be added that the government imposed countrywide lockdown from 5 April 2021.
