5, 000 distressed families get cash assistance in Dimla upazila

Five-thousand COVID-19 pandemic affected poor, jobless and distressed families of 10 unions in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari district received Taka 500 in cash each as a gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday. Under supervision of Alhaj Aftab Uddin Sarker, MP, (Nilphamari-1 constituency), the money was distributed in separate functions arranged on the respective union parishad premises with the union chairmen concerned in the chair abiding by the health directives.

Under the programme, Taka 25 lakh was distributed among the 5,000 distressed families of Dimla upazila before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festivity to assist them in celebrating the festivity tackling the pandemic situation.Dimla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Joyoshree Rani Sarker inaugurated distribution of the cash assistance among the COVID-19 pandemic affected jobless and distressed people in the main function held on Dimla Sadar union parishad premises, reports BSS.

Sub-assistant engineer of Dimla upazila parishad Md. Ferdous Alam, all members and chairman of Dimla Sadar union parishad, local leaders of Awami League and its associate bodies attended the function. The UNO called upon the affected jobless, needy and distressed people to wash hands, use masks and maintain cleanliness and abiding by the health directives to prevent spread of coronavirus for safety of their own and others.

She said livelihoods of the poor, middle and lower middle class people, workers and unemployed people of different professions have been affected during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have become unemployed and lost their livelihoods during the second wave of the pandemic before fully overcoming the stresses of the first wave of the pandemic.

"The government has stood beside jobless, destitute, unemployed and helpless people with the gift of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the epidemic situation," she said, adding all affected people will get this grant and other assistance in phases.
