One of capital Dhaka's eyesores is the decades old overhead electricity cables which are also responsible for accidents during annual storms called Nor'Westers. Finally the Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) is to start the work of its underground cabling project by October this year.
The other cables that are still visible in many parts of Dhaka are the internet and Television channel cables. Some effort was taken in the northern parts of the capital, but many remain and needs to be removed also.Under the project 90 kilometres of overhead electricity cables will be go underground of which about 115 kilometres are of 11 kV overhead lines and 75 kilometres are 0.4 kv lines.
Some of the equipment required for the work is already with the DPDC and we hope it will not face further delay for one reason or the other. It was supposed to start in January last year, but delayed due to COVID-19 as Chinese engineers who were responsible could not come.We look forward to the quick implementation of the project and spare the resiudents from accidents as well as power cuts as soon as winds start to blow. It will strengthen the power distribution system which is essential for the country's economic growth.
The authorities must assist the DPDC in ensuring that internet service providers (ISPs) and cable TV operators to join the project so that all kinds of cables go underground at the same time to save tax payers money and stop the habit of digging the same place again and again for the profit of the businessmen involved. This is the most important part of beautifying Dhaka and all must cooperate for its quick implementation.
