The corruption and irregularities have gripped the Department of Shipping as it seems the top regulatory agency is nobody's son due to negligence of its top officials.Barrister Mahmud Hassan of Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association reminded Shipping Ministry State Minister and Secretary about the unfit vessel concerned by writing a formal letter. In the letter the lawyer requested the minister and secretary to take necessary measure and to impose barrier so that the domestic vessel named M V Prince of Sohag does not get any clearance certificate in the days to come.
Barrister Hassan also stated that the Department of Shipping authority disqualified registration of the vessel on January 31, 2021 due to glitch. The letter has been conveyed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ACC Chairman, Shipping Department Director General, BIWTA Chairman, National Security Intelligence Director General, Shipping Department Chief Engineer, Shipping Department Chief Inspector and other department chiefs with a view to informing the incident.
The owner of M V Prince Sohag Hossain Mir became able to manage BIWTA, Sadar Ghat zone, Joint Director Joynal Abedin to get the route permit, but surveyor Mahbubur Rashid stood against the permit. In the meantime, Shipping Department Inspection Team led by Chief Inspector Shafiqur Rahaman created barrier to plying of the vessel with around 400 hundred passengers. As a result, the owner of the vessel became furious.
Surveyor Engineer Mahbubur Rashid at Sadarghat office with his family members is passing days with insecurity. Sohag Hossain Mir, the owner of M V Prince of Sohag, is threatening him at his office and residence. As a result, he has been bound to submit an application to Director General of Shipping Department and unwilling to work at his office as surveyor under severe pressure and threats from the owner of the vessel concerned.
The government has decided to avoid lockdown on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha with complying public transport and reopening shopping malls across the country. As a result, a section of that department has become mad with a view to providing erroneous survey report, fitness certificate to the vessels despite those waterway transports are quite unfit to comply.
Shipping Ministry Secretary Md. Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury has told The Asian Age that the incident in respect of M V Prince of Sohag has not come to his knowledge. He will take necessary action regarding the incident upon getting allegations.Department of Shipping Director General Commodore Abu Zafar Jalal Uddin told The Asian Age that no clearance certificate is given without exclusive inspection and looking into soft and physical fitness. In respect of such job, there is no scope to take decision hurriedly.
BIWTA Chairman felt hesitant to clarify the heinous corruption that may cause the victim of around 400 hundred passengers who were on the board of M V prince of Sohag. Finally he leaves it to his public relation officer and told The Asian Age correspondent that you had better make contact with PRO.Chief Engineer Monjurul Kabir told The Asian Age that we are yet to get clearance document to comply the vessel. We shall try to overview the matter on July 18 and take necessary step.
Department of Shipping Chief Inspector Shafiqur Rahman told that the controversial incidents regarding M V Prince of Soahag raises questions on the image of shipping department. In order to remove the trend of corruption of the sector, the inspection team is desperately trying find out the persons behind the screen.
The shipping and BWITA officials are so arrogant that they have issued duplicate survey report to domestic vessel named M V Price of Sohag that remained unfit for six months. The owner of the vessel submitted application at 3.30pm on July 16. The concerned owner got fitness certificate within a few hours. But the top management knew nothing, the sources of shipping department said.
