In recent times it has been noticed with alarm that some of Bangladesh's celebrities are found involved with narcotics, blackmailing and other unlawful activities. The government waged a war on illegal drugs in 2019 which was appreciated by prominent citizens. Law and order forces have meanwhile nabbed models Faria Mahbub Piyasha, Mariam Akhter Mou and famed actress Pori Moni on different allegations.Some elite clubs are derailing the moral values of gullible youths.
Foreign liquor and drugs were found in the residences of the above-named models and actress. Even these individuals used to blackmail people and grab huge sums of money from their victims.A culture of impunity, moral degradation and culprits' getting political backing in many cases are the major reasons why incidents of keeping illegal drugs and blackmailing continue unabated in the country, according to educationists and psychiatrists.
Stressing on imparting moral education and ensuring exemplary punishment to the law-breakers, academic experts have said the government must act immediately to stop such crimes.Now it has become a challenge to keep youths on the right track. Guardians will have to monitor the movement and activities of their children so that they do not get engaged with drug addiction, alcohol or other reprehensible things.
The Asian Age spoke to a few esteemed civil society members who expressed concern over the prevailing circumstances.Former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique said, "Nowadays boys and girls spend most of their time on cell phones and video games. They have no time to learn moral values or ethical norms."
Renowned psychiatrist Dr. Anwara Syed Huq said, "Children do not have enough space to play these days. As a result they are getting connected with different immoral deeds. Both parents and law enforcement agencies should come up with necessary steps to rescue youngsters from these pitfalls."
Former Vice Chancellor of National University Professor Dr. Harun Ur Rashid said, "Different dimensions of corruption and irregularities are going on in Bangladesh. Keeping boys and girls on the right moral path is a tough job in the present time. However, the law and order forces are doing the right job by raiding the houses of models and celebrities who are doing illegal business."Professor Anu Muhammad, Jahangirnagar University said, "People who are involved in illegal activities in Dhaka have hot connections with high-ups. This is how they it is difficult to take actions against them."
