An editor of a local weekly newspaper was arrested while asking money as extortion from teachers of a primary school in Ashuganj of Brahmanbaria district. The arrested man was identified as Ali Azam, editor of a local weekly Satyer Diganta published from Brahmanbaria.
The incident took place at East Government Primary School in Sharifpur Union of the upazila on Tuesday morning. Habibur Rahman, headmaster of the school, said, "The teachers were working regularly in their classes in the morning. Meanwhile, Ali Azam and Ashikur Rahman Rony introduced themselves as journalists. Later, they wanted to see the school attendance register and various important secret documents. They got angry when the teachers didn't agree to show it. At one stage, Ali Azam and Ashikur Rahman Rony started abusing the teachers."
"When the two journalists threatened the teachers to make on the matter, the teachers asked them what their fault is. Ali Azam and Ashikur Rahman Rony told the teachers that if you wanted to solve the issue, you will have to give us Tk 20,000", the headmaster added. Seeing the matter, the locals came forward. Seeing the bad situation, Ashikur Rahman Rony fled from the spot. Later, the locals detained Ali Azam and handed him over to the police. Azad Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ashuganj police station, said "Ali Azam was arrested and brought to the police station. If the plaintiff lodges a written complaint, legal action will be taken against him."
