The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of jailed Khaleda Zia is maybe thinking that people have a short memory in Bangladesh and they shed crocodile tears to harness support for anti-government campaign. The BNP's secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a very polite politician by all counts, has fallen into the "memory loss" trap when he tried to charm farmers who gathered under the party's farmers' front claiming the group did not get any incentive from the government during the pandemic and are the most neglected section of people in Bangladesh.
Fakhrul sought their support in building a strong anti-government campaign and qllow the BNP to restore people's rights.Indeed, Bangladeshis have a short memory and have proved ungrateful when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in 1975.
But, neither the farmer or the people in general, have not forgotten the killing of farmers during BNP's rule and how the peasants faced months of harassment after the incident. Many were forced to go into hiding. On the other hand, the ruling Awami League government has undertaken a number of steps to help the farmers including hiking the price of rice and transporation of the farm products by arranging special trains to mention a few.
People do not take BNP's threat of an anti-government campaign under a "caretaker government" an arrangement which it made a circus in 2006, while the other fear is its deep friendship with the party of war criminals - Jamaat-e-Islam - and pro-Pakistani stance.BNP should come to its senses, accept the reality and respect the wishes of the people, without resorting to falsehood in almost all national issues.
