Shahedul Haque Dr. Zakir Naik
Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken up steps to seize the assets of Shahedul Haque over his involvement in casino scams. On the other hand, Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has informed all banks to freeze the bank accounts of Shahedul Haque.
Shahedul Haque is currently absconding in different countries including United States, Middle East, Malaysia, Singapore etcetera. Allegations show that Shahedul Haque is closely associated with controversial preacher Dr. Zakir Naik. Reportedly Shahedul Haque first moved away to the Middle East with the help of his accomplices who are connected with Dr. Zakir Naik's Peace TV and Peace School in Bangladesh and some Middle East countries.
It may be recalled that the militants who attacked Holey Artisan Café were inspired by the speeches of Dr. Zakir Naik. BFIU asked all banks to freeze Shahedul Haque's bank accounts on 24.10.2019, according to a letter signed by Ikramul Hasan, Deputy Director of BFIU. Ikramul Hasan also sent an email to BFIU Head Abu Hena Mohammad Razee Hasan on 24 April 2020 and another email was sent on 26 April 2020 regarding the suspension of banking transactions of Shahedul Haque.
In one report ACC accused Shahedul Haque of acquiring illegal wealth of over 13 crore taka. In another report ACC stated that Shahedul Haque amassed illegal wealth of nearly 330 million Bangladeshi currencies.
Allegations further show that Shahedul Haque has connections with some African terrorist networks through which he scares his rivals. These terrorist outfits are based in, according to sources, in Tanzania, Nigeria and Somalia.
Shahedul Haque's father's name is Morshedul Haque while he is married to Sarina Tamanna Haque. His two addresses in Bangladesh are 173 (sixth floor), Cantonment, Dhaka and 19/1, Kakrail Road, Shantinagar, Dhaka.
Shahedul Haque laundered a great deal of money abroad. Allegedly a huge part of his laundered money has been spent on financing radical groups and militants who are explicit threats to Bangladesh's security and communal harmony.
Simultaneously, reports have surfaced that Shahedul Haque is spearheading false propaganda against Bangladesh from his overseas locations.
Security analysts have said that perpetrators like Shahedul Haque can cause any kind of damage to Bangladesh through their links with fanatical gangs and religious extremists.
Major General (Retd) Abdur Rashid said to The Asian Age, "Bangladesh government has taken up a tough stance against militancy, cyber crime and terror finance. It is very much admirable. At the same time it has to be monitored whether anyone is financing local radical groups from abroad. The financial regulatory authorities, intelligence units and law and order forces should work in coordinated ways to safeguard Bangladesh against anti-state entities."
