Fast Fashion Industry is lethal to Environment

Life’s ebbs and flows always teaches us something, which if learned wisely can be used as a compass to take us to the right direction. 2020 will always be remembered as the year of uncertainty and unprecedented time that changed the whole existence of human being. The pandemic brought everything in standstill. Not a single industry was their which was not affected by COVID-19, the very system and powerful countries were collapsing before we all could make any sense.

COVID-19 was a man-made disaster or a natural phenomena is still a matter of discussion. In the process we realized that human plays a vital role in preventing these kind of viral diseases by simply adopting healthy and sustainable choices. This precarious time actually highlighted the need of adopting sustainable practice to stop another pandemic.

To start with the basic is what we wear, if what we eat is important enough to push organic food to the forefront, what we wear is just as essential. Now as the world opens up and we are socializing and going places, we want to dress up again. But after living a confined and simpler life during COVID, this is a good time to take stock of the implications of how we dress. Fashion, and especially fast fashion, has enormous environmental impacts on our planet.

How sustainable fashion can create a positive planet? Sustainable Fashion creates less waste. Globally, there’s one garbage truck of textile waste dumped at a landfill or burnt every second. It ensures fair wages & proper working conditions. Work force is key to run any industry and if they are exposed to chemicals and toxic waste then how are we balancing the Eco-system. If adopted it can reduce CO2 & Other Greenhouse Gases Emission, as Fast Fashion has a huge carbon footprint resulting from material creation, manufacturing, transportation, and even textile waste decomposing in landfills. Sustainable Fashion Saves Water, how is the fact many are not aware. The fashion industry is one of the largest water consumers in the world right now.

The water is consumed not only for washing garments but also during manufacturing, dyeing, finishing processes and create pollution of waterways with toxic chemicals. In fact, one cotton T-shirt can require as much as 2,720 litres of water to produce, according to an Institute of Water report. A major concern we think from the food angle is Saving Animal Lives, Every purchase made from a sustainable brand stipulates the drive for thoughtful, environmentally responsible products. The more we adopt sustainable fashion, the more ethical alternatives will become the dominant paradigm in a world where fast fashion rules the roost of the garment industry. Adopting sustainable fashion can saving trees, to make fabrics like rayon, viscose and other fabrics, 70 million tons of trees are cut down each year.

I have taken a step to contribute towards climate change, when the whole world was struggling to survive including myself I made it a motto to focus my business on sustainable practice and adoption. Thus‘Gloom’ was born a collection crafted to showcase how we can adopt sustainability in our fashion sector.

The range philosophy Is uniqueness immersed in sadness, a sense of being lost and fighting to find hope.My inspiration of the collection was from the framework of avant-garde outfits built from old clothes to promote sustainability. Gloom is my first sustainable project and I chose up-cycled process to make this collection. Fashion industry should come forward to adopt responsible fashion through sustainable practices. Up-cycling is a wonderful way to turn unwanted clothes into outstanding artistry that is not only stylish but also contributes to saving the environment.

Deploying environmentally hazardous procedures, obtaining exploitative animal-based textiles, and engaging in unfair labor practices, making fashion an unsustainable sector with social justice concerns. The time is now we need make efforts and choices that should saves us from another pandemic. We have been observing 50 years of World Environment Day but did we measure how far we have come, why the global warming is not reducing it’s impact on our daily lives. A food for thought for all of us who are part of Eco-system.
