The World Bank has congratulated Bangladesh on the completion and inauguration of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge with domestic funding. "This is a happy occasion," said World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh Mercy Miyang Tembon, while joining the inauguration program of Padma Bridge at the Mawa end on Saturday.
"This is the time to move Bangladesh-World Bank relations forward. The Padma Bridge will make a huge contribution to the economic growth of Bangladesh," she said.
She added that World Bank is one of Bangladesh's development partners. "We believe that the Padma Bridge will improve the economy of Bangladesh. The bridge will create new jobs, bring goods to market faster, improve living standards and elevate poverty."
The World Bank agreed to co-finance the Padma Bridge project but later filed a case in 2012 alleging corruption.
However, on February 10, 2017, a Canadian court ruled out Word Bank's allegations of corruption in the Padma Bridge project.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Padma Bridge with great fanfare.
The inauguration of the 6.15-kilometre bridge took place at its Mawa point in Munshiganj at noon on Saturday.
"The bridge belongs to the people of Bangladesh. It showcases our passion, our creativity, our courage, our endurance, and our perseverance," she said.
