"Growing up in the small town of Jamshedpur, my life was sheltered. My knowledge of other cultures & countries was limited. Pakistan, for example, I knew only through books, movies & the spirited Ind-Pak cricket matches. But I often questioned the rivalry & hatred that transpired between both countries. And then, years later, in 2018, I met a Pakistani girl on my very first day at Harvard Business School. Amidst awkward, 'Hello, how are yous,' a beautiful friendship was born.

Being batchmates, initially, our conversations were limited to classes & assignments. But gradually, our friendship developed as we delved deeper into each other's stories. Sometimes we'd have lunch together-she'd tell me about her culture in Pakistan while I told her about my life back in India & then our bond further grew over love for biryani, chai, &of course…cricket! We celebrated Eid& Diwali & spent all our weekends hunting for the best restaurants in Boston!  Like food, we also shared a love for travel. So when we weren't eating, we'd sit for hours discussing travel plans & once we even went for this girls' trip to Puerto Rico-we had the best time of our life.

There, sitting by the beach, with the stars twinkling above us, we made a pact-to always stay in touch. And that stayed true even after we graduated. I remember, on our graduation day, she said, 'Don't forget me.' And all I said was, 'That's never happening'. My heart was full-a neighbor had turned into a friend.  Today, even after 2 years, we've stayed true to our promise. We've been in touch via calls; keeping each other updated on our lives. Like when I decided to quit my job & start my own venture, she was there rooting for my success. All she said was 'I'm so proud of you!'

And you know, in all these years, people have asked us, 'How can you two be friends when your countries are rivals?' But how can we let political differences come in between friendships? We have to look beyond the borders & into the heart of the other person…because at the end of the day, our hearts all beat the same."     Humans of Bombay, Fb
