Sarail Annada Govt High School: Teacher shortage hampers academic activities

Teacher shortage has remained a longstanding problem at Annada Govt High School in Sarail of Brahmanbaria district hampering academic activities of the old renowned institution.

Guardians are concerned about the future of meritorious students as the pupils have to face tough competition to get enrolled in the best secondary school of the upazila.

The male school now struggles to maintain standards with a number of guest teachers.

History says late philanthropist Annada Prasad Roy set up the school in his name on around 3.73 acres of land in upazila headquarters area in 1871 AD. The school was nationalized in 1986. Since nationalization, the institution has been facing the shortage of teachers.

Contacted, Sarail Annada Govt High School acting headmistress Selina Akter Rosy said, "The number of students at the school now stands at 620. Though the number of teachers is 17, the institution has now only 7 teachers. The teacher crisis prevails for a long time. But we are trying our best to maintain the quality of education amid such a situation."

Upazila Secondary Education Officer Sahid Khaled Jamil Khan said, "Many teacher posts at Annada Govt High School have been vacant for a long period of time. We have informed the higher authorities about the matter. Hopefully, the crisis will end soon."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Sarwar Uddin said, "The issue of teacher crisis at Annada Govt High School has already been informed to the authorities concerned. The crisis will be resolved with new recruitment of teachers by the government."

The issue will be discussed at the coordination meeting, the UNO added.
