An allegation of land grabbing has been brought against teacher-turned developer Jahidul Islam Khan, owner of Index Developer Limited.
According to the family members of late Hamida Khatun, owner of house no. 20 located on the road no. 99 of Gulshan-2 in the capital, Hamida Khatun bought the building from RAJUK in 1966. In 2007, she started the construction of a six-storey building on her 18 katha land. The construction of the building was completed in 2011 with a loan of one Tk one crore from a bank. As she didn’t manage the cost with the loan, she executed an agreement with Jahidul Islam Khan, owner of Index Developer Limited.
Hamida’s family members claimed that according to the contract, Jahidul will need Tk 5 crore to complete the overall work of the six-storey building. At that time, Hamida and Jahidul agreed that this cost would be borne by his company Index Developer. However, Index will rent the building for eight years in exchange for this Tk 5 crore. Tk 5 lakhs will be deducted per month from the rent collected from the building. At the same time Hamida Khatun will be given another Tk 3.5 lakhs in cash. Despite the agreement, Jahidul violated the terms and conditions of the agreement. He did not pay rent to the original building owner but occupied the building for almost four years.
The family of Hamida Khatun did not get any remedy from the police station or court. The company has more such cases in different areas of the capital.
Laboni Rahman, a resident of the capital’s Uttara, also has been cheated Index Developer Limited as the company forcefully grabbed a plot measuring about 7 katha from her.
The victim Laboni said that she negotiated with Jahidul to sell her two kathas of land next to Road No. 14 in Sector No. 5 for Tk 25 lakhs. At that time, Jahidul took possession of the entire plot of seven kathas by paying Tk 10 lakh by executing an earnest deed. Laboni went from door to door to recover her and from Jahidul but couldn’t find any remedy.
A piece of land Sharif Ahmed, a retired colonel in Sector 14 of Uttara, measuring 8 katha has illegally been occupied by Jahidul since 2013.
When Jahidul Islam was asked about the allegations, he said “All the allegations brought against me are false.”
