The Indian High Commission in Dhaka celebrated the 52nd anniversary of Maitri Diwas on Wednesday (December 6, 2023). It is on this day in 1971 that India recognized an independent and sovereign Bangladesh, ten days before Bangladesh's liberation. The decision to mark December 6 as Maitri Diwas was taken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the State visit of Modi to Dhaka in March, 2021.

High Commissioner Pranay Verma welcomed the guests and in his address, he highlighted the deep and historic ties between India and Bangladesh.

He underscored that Maitri Diwas signifies the genesis of a partnership rooted in equality, mutual respect, and unwavering solidarity-a proud moment symbolizing India's steadfast support for Bangladesh's struggle for freedom.

The Maitri Diwas celebrations showcased the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India and Bangladesh through various performances by eminent artists from Bangladesh.

The event featured classical and folk dances, music and recitation. Joler Gaan, a prominent folk dance group of Bangladesh performed in the event.
