HC orders authorities to curtail medicine price hike

 
The High Court (HC) has ordered the authorities concerned to take effective measures to prevent price hikes of all types of medicines across Bangladesh. The Director General of the Directorate General of Drug Administration and others concerned has been directed to implement the order.  The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why their inaction to check the price hike of medicines should not be declared illegal.

The court also ordered to stop the sale of unapproved drugs imported from abroad.

The High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order after hearing a writ petition.

Earlier, a writ petition was filed with the High Court attaching a news report that said medicine prices have increased by 7-140% in two weeks.
The Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) filed the writ petition.

According to the report, in two months, different companies in the country have increased the prices of their produced medicines unabated.
Prices of at least 50 types of medicines have been increased by 20-140%.
