"'Tu kyu mujhe gussa dilati hai? You know I love you!' This is what Vivek would say.

Now I wonder, 'How was I so blind?' He'd always make me feel worthless. And if I wanted to break up, he'd say, 'Mere alawa koi nahi milega.' I even isolated myself from my friends.

I'm an MBA in HR, but after graduation, he pressured me to work with him as a counselor saying, 'We'll be together!' Out of fear, I agreed. Once, our coworker joked about Vivek & I laughed. Later that night, he verbally abused me & said, 'You made me do it!' I felt guilty & apologized.

After that incident, he proposed & pressured me into agreeing. My parents were reluctant, but they caved. So, at 25, I got married & moved to Lucknow thinking, 'Ab sab thik ho jayega.' But he'd lose his temper for something as small as me leaving a glass in the sink or talking to my family over call. He'd yell & throw things at me.

I started home tuitions to distract myself but he'd humiliate me in front of my students.  He wouldn't let me leave the house alone, saying, 'You'll meet other men.' I felt suffocated. Once he misbehaved with the autowala. When I tried to stop him, he slapped me. That was the day I knew-it was never me…always him.

And when I'd talk to his parents, he'd threaten to kill me. And he almost did. Once during a fight, he threw a knife at me. I got a cut behind my ear. That's when I called the domestic violence helpline, but when they answered, I couldn't speak. The marriage was for 6.5 years & I visited my parents only twice. Even when we'd visit, he wouldn't leave me alone with my parents. Every time Maa-Papa asked, 'How are you beta?' I'd say, 'Sab badhiya.'

And last year, he brought a gun home. We fought over it & he beat me for an hour. That day, I called home. Bhai asked, 'Tujhe kya karna hai?' I said I wanted to leave. He said, 'I'm coming.'
