In a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in Nepal, a same-sex marriage has been officially registered at Rampur Municipality in Palpa district. China Kumari Nepali, 31, and Jyoti Sarki, 36, successfully registered their marriage at the Municipality’s Ward No. 9 Office, marking the legal recognition of their union.
The Local Civil Registration Officer and Ward Secretary of Rampur-9, Md Yunus Khan, confirmed that a marriage registration certificate has been issued in the names of Nepali and Sarki. The registration was carried out in accordance with a circular from the Department of National ID and Civil Registration, following an application submitted by the couple.
Ward Secretary Khan noted that the marriage certificate was issued on Sunday, making this the first instance of a same-sex marriage being registered in the district. The process was completed in coordination with the Department of National ID and Civil Registration.
Nepali, who hails from Jabgadi, Rampur-9, and Sarki, a resident of Mithukram, Baudikali Rural Municipality-1, Nawalpur, had originally tied the knot on October 15, 2021, at Siddhababa Temple in Palpa, in accordance with prevailing customs.
This registration marks a historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community in Nepal, as same-sex marriages continue to gain legal recognition across the country.
