Jubo League leader killed by 'BNP activists' in Jashore

A local Jubo League leader, a village doctor by profession, was killed in an attack reportedly carried out by BNP activists at Chuagachha upazila in Jashore district.

The incident took place around 7:30-8 PM on Tuesday evening at a tea stall in Jagannathpur village of the upazila.
Anisur Rahman, 58, son of late Dr Jalil of Singhjhuli union's Jagannathpur village, was former vice-president of Jashore's Chaugacha upazila Jubo League and rural medical practitioner.

Anisur was also the younger brother of a former president of Chaugacha upazila Jubo League unit and Union Parishad Chairman Ashraf Hossain Asha, who was previously murdered in a similar attack in 2002.

According to Anisur's family, the attack was politically motivated, solely due to his affiliation with the Awami League. His son, Abid Hasan, reported that his father went to a local tea stall near their home when he was suddenly assaulted by a group of known BNP-affiliated militants, including individuals named Lenthu, Hadi, Amin, Kurban, Abu Taleb, Ohidul, Eliyas and seven to eight others.

Armed with hammers, iron rods, and traditional weapons, the assailants inflicted severe injuries, breaking both his legs and arms and crushing his spine. When Anisur's cousin, Salam, intervened, he was also attacked, suffering severe head and bodily injuries.

Anisur was rushed to Chaugacha Upazila Health Complex and due to the severity of his injuries, he was referred to Jessore Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at around 4 AM on Wednesday.

Prominent Awami League leaders, including Singhjhuli Union's former Chairman Rezaur Rahman Rendu, expressed their condolences at Jessore Hospital, denouncing the brutal killing.

Meanwhile, Upazila BNP General Secretary and Hakimpur Union Chairman Masudul Hasan condemned the murder, emphasizing that "criminals have no political identity" and calling for immediate arrests of those responsible.

Acting officer-in-charge of Chuagachha Police Station SI Mehedi Hasan Munno, confirmed the incident, stating that preparations to file a case were underway.
