Terming Bangladesh a trusted friend, Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Mr. IWAMA Kiminori has said the construction work of Matarbari deep sea port is going on in full swing as the JICA is determined to complete the work as early as possible.
The envoy said these after a meeting with Shipping Adviser Brigadier General Sakhawat (Rtd) Hossain at the latter's ministry office on Wednesday.
IWAMA Kiminori said, "Japan has remained beside Bangladesh for the last 50 years as well with assistance to development activities including education, health, human resources, infrastructure and others different sector. On the other hand Japanese volunteers are conducting various service activities in remote areas of Bangladesh."
The Ambassador expressed his interest to cooperate in the ship-breaking industry in Bangladesh.
Adviser Shakhawat Hossain told to the envoy that Japan-Bangladesh relations are multi-dimensional and Japan is playing a crucial role in our socio economic development. "Our only deep sea port Matarbari is being constructed with the financial and technical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Export-import trade will expand after the port is built."
Within 2030 year Matarbari deep sea port will come under operational activities, he added.
Noting the importance of the deep seaport, the adviser said the deep sea port will not only create a regional linkage, but its location is also strategically and geo-politically very much important.
High officials of the ministry concerned and Japanese Embassy were present at the time.
