Rayhan Abid, BAU Correspondent: Under the theme 'Caring of soil: Measure, monitor, manage,' Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) celebrated the 10th World Soil Day on Thursday.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan along with teachers and students participated in a rally organized by the Soil Science Department.
Then a seminar on World Soil Day was held at the Deen office conference of Agriculture faculty. The seminar was presided over by Associated Professor Dr. Mohammad Golam Kibria, Head of Soil Science Department of BAU. The keynote address was presented by Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam-1, former professor of the Department of Soil Science. Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture of BAU, Professor Dr. G. M. Mujibur Rahman, and Student Affairs Advisor Professor Dr. Md. Shahidul Haque were special guests at the event.
The seminar speakers emphasized the importance of proper soil testing, regular monitoring, and sustainable management. Soil health is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly goals 2, 3, 13, and 15. This highlights the strong connection between soil health, safe food production, and human health.
The speakers also said that 95 percent of food is produced from soil, therefore soil health has a role in eliminating hunger and achieving land degradation neutrality by 2030.
