The Holy Quran was burned in six halls, including Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, Syed Ameer Ali Hall, Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall, Shah Makhdum Hall, Sher-E-Bangla Hall and Motihar Hall of Rajshahi University (RU) on Saturday night.
In response to the incident, general students formed a human chain on Paris Road of the university at 3 pm on Sunday demanding exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.
Earlier, the university administration formed a nine-member investigation committee, chaired by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Md. Farid Uddin Khan, which was confirmed by Public Relations Administrator Professor Dr. Md. Akhter Hossain Mazumder.
The university administration has not yet identified the individuals involved in the incident. Shihab Uddin, a resident student of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall, said, "After performing Fajr prayer in the mosque of the hall, as usual, while reciting the Qur'an, we saw that the first two surahs and the last two surahs of two Qurans had been burned and placed on the bookshelf."
Regarding this matter, Syed Ameer Ali Hall Provost Professor Md. Harun-or-Rashid stated, "It is not yet known who is responsible for the burning. Burning the Quran is an insult to religious sentiments, a provocation, and a despicable act. The culprits must be brought to justice." Earlier, at 12:30 pm, during an emergency press briefing in the Senate building of the university, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqib said, "So far, incidents of burning the Holy Quran have occurred in four halls. Whoever is involved in this incident, if identified, will face the maximum punishment."
"In light of this incident, I urge my students, staff, and officials to maintain communal harmony at our university," he added.
