Chandragiri Municipality Introduces Online Recommendation for Citizenship Certificates
Chandragiri Municipality in Kathmandu has become the first local government in the Valley to introduce an online system for recommending citizenship certificates. The initiative, launched in Ward 12, Balambu, marks a significant step toward digital governance in Nepal.

The municipality rolled out the service after providing training to secretaries from all 15 wards and executive members in collaboration with the Home Ministry and the District Administration Office, Kathmandu. Mayor Ghanshyam Giri and Chief Administrative Officer Hem Raj Aryal inaugurated the program on Monday by forwarding online recommendations for two Balambu residents, Anuj Maharjan and Tisha Shrestha, using the new software.

The Home Ministry revealed that by mid-January, nearly 2,000 wards across 28 districts had adopted online recommendations for citizenship certificates, a process first initiated in Gaindakot, Nawalparasi, last year.

The digital system has streamlined record-keeping and service delivery while reducing instances of fraudulent documentation. Chandragiri Municipality has announced plans to implement the system across all its wards within the week.

Mayor Giri emphasized the municipality’s commitment to adopting tech-friendly governance, including plans to introduce digital signatures in the near future. Currently, the municipality also offers digital services for house map certifications, revenue collection, and vital registrations.

Assistant Chief District Officer Mukti Ram Rijal commended Chandragiri Municipality for its leadership in digital public services, expressing hope that other local governments in Kathmandu would soon follow suit.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Nepal’s administrative processes and improve public service delivery through technology.
