BN assumes NIOHC Chairmanship for 2025-2027 term

The 24th meeting of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC) was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 11 to 13 February 2025. A delegation of two members from Bangladesh Navy (BN), led by Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, Chairman of the National Hydrographic Committee and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations), participated in this prestigious meeting, according to a press release issued by Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

The meeting brought together delegates from ten member states, including Egypt, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. Additionally, six associate member states, three observer states, and representatives from various international organizations attended to discuss significant advancements in hydrography, regional initiatives, and the evolving role of hydrography in fostering a thriving Blue Economy. Other key topics included maritime safety, sustainable maritime resource management, and hydrography's role in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water).

On the final day of the meeting, Bangladesh Navy officially assumed the Chairmanship of NIOHC for the 2025-2027 term with unanimous support from the member states. It marks a significant milestone. This leadership role highlights Bangladesh's commitment to advancing hydrographic capabilities, strengthening regional cooperation, and contributing to global efforts for safer and more efficient navigation.

As the Chairman, Bangladesh is set to play a pivotal role in shaping regional hydrographic policies and promoting sustainable maritime development. This achievement further solidifies Bangladesh's stature in the international maritime sector and reaffirms its dedication to innovation, collaboration, and responsible ocean governance, the press release concludes.
