Poet Sohel Hasan Ghalib remanded for two days

Police force has obtained court's permission to place poet Sohel Hasan Ghalib to on remand for two days under Section 54 over allegations about hurting people's religious sentiments. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid issued the above order after a hearing on the investigating officer's petition was held on Monday.

Sub Inspector Shwapan Kumar has said that Detective Branch (DB) of Bangladesh Police applied to the court on Sunday seeking seven days remand for Sohel Hasan Ghalib. Sohel Hasan Ghalib was produced before the court on 14 February 2025. Police Department arrested Sohel Hasan Ghalib on 13 February 2025 from Fatullah under Narayanganj city.

Allegedly Sohel Hasan Ghalib's poems marketed by Ujan Publishers appeared on social media in 2024. Netizens blamed Sohel Hasan Ghalib for poking fun at Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through one of his poems. Sohel Hasan Ghalib teaches at a college besides writing poetry.

On the other hand, over one hundred authors, painters, teachers, journalists and human rights organizers have urged the authorities concerned to release Sohel Hasan Ghalib immediately without conditions.
