Students at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have initiated a hunger strike, calling for the ousting of Vice-Chancellor Muhammad Masud. This action is in solidarity with the current movement of students from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).
On Wednesday, April 23, at 11:15 AM, eight university students commenced a hunger strike to death at the Mahua Mancha near the New Arts building. During that period, Dr. Kh. Lutful Elahi, a professor in the university's History Department, demonstrated his support for the students. Reports indicate eight students are on a hunger strike at the university's Mahua Manch. The individuals participating in the hunger strike include Tawhid Mohammad Siam, Arifuzzaman Ujjal, Ziauddin Ayan, Nazmul Hasan Limon, Jannatul Ferdous Anjum, Mehrab Hossain Turja, Nahid Hasan Emon and Sajjad Hossain.
Tawhid Mohammad Siam, the central senior joint convener of the Bangladesh Democratic Student Council, expressed concern regarding student advisors' silence on pressing student issues, stating, "We perceive that their lack of response indicates a loss of legitimacy." Should any student face adverse consequences regarding the KUET matter, it will mark the final day of this interim government."
Arifuzzaman Ujjal, the JU unit convener of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, expressed, "This interim government, formed on the bloodshed of July, is neglecting the rational demands put forth by the student body. Students at KUET have initiated a hunger strike, calling for the resignation of the Vice Chancellor in response to what they describe as a reasonable demand. Support has been voiced for their cause."
