Yunus warns of bid to 'sabotage' polls

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has warned that those seeking to block Bangladesh's progress will do everything possible to sabotage the February election, urging all political parties to remain vigilant and united.

After meetings with leaders from seven political parties and one Islamist organisation on Tuesday, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam quoted Yunus as saying that the election would be held in time in a "celebratory environment", bdnews24 reports.

It will provide a positive experience even for those who had previously faced obstacles when voting, he added.

"Attempts to create unrest are already visible, and more may follow. Our responsibility is to ensure the vote takes place and power is transferred to the elected government," Yunus said.

Yunus described the upcoming vote as "unprecedented", calling it the election of all citizens and political parties, aimed at building the Bangladesh of the future. He also emphasised that foreign interference must be prevented and urged full cooperation to maintain order.

The meeting also addressed the Durga Puja festival, with Yunus calling for vigilance to prevent attempts at disruption while ensuring celebrations remain peaceful and festive nationwide.
