Bangladesh interim government's Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has told journalists that prison terms for company offences have been abolished. From now on only monetary penalties will be imposed in case of company crimes, Shafiqul Islam further said.
Shafiqul Islam conveyed the above information while addressing a press conference in the capital's Foreign Service Academy on Thursday (8 January 2026). He said "Earlier on, there were provisions for imprisonment for company crimes but now that law has been abrogated. From now on company crime perpetrators will be punished with monetary penalties only."
Shafiqul Alam expressed hope that the abolition of imprisonment for company crimes will safeguard entrepreneurs' honour and safety and it will also enhance the ease of doing business in Bangladesh.
On the other hand, the Advisory Council has accorded final approval to the drafted Amendment Act 2026 for Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Shafiqul Islam said "The number of departments in Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy was not sufficient earlier. Now it has been raised to nine departments including some new wings. The government is now authorized to appoint a representative from the ethnic groups in the board of directors in Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to make it more inclusive."
Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Mazumder said "We have talked to police force about the murder of a Shechchhashebak Dal leader who was killed on Wednesday. Police Department has filed a case in connection with this murder. Raids are going on to detain the attackers."
