Rose Byrne offered a light-hearted explanation for why her longtime partner, Bobby Cannavale, was absent from the 2026 Golden Globes, where she won best actress in a musical or comedy film for "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You".
Accepting her first-ever Golden Globe, Byrne appeared visibly surprised as she took the stage, admitting she had not prepared a speech. She thanked writer-director Mary Bronstein and joked about the film's modest scale, saying it was shot in just 25 days on a very small budget. The Australian actor was accompanied at the ceremony by her brother George, and noted that her parents had subscribed to Paramount+ to watch the event from Sydney.
Addressing Cannavale's absence, Byrne told the audience that he was attending a reptile expo in New Jersey to find a bearded dragon, drawing laughter from the crowd. Although Byrne referred to Cannavale as her husband, the couple-together for over a decade-are not legally married.
Byrne beat fellow nominees Cynthia Erivo, Kate Hudson, Chase Infiniti, Amanda Seyfried and Emma Stone in the category. The ceremony was hosted by Nikki Glaser at the Beverly Hilton and broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime.
