Bangladesh's captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has etched his name into the history books, and so have Bangladesh after sweeping Pakistan 2-0 in the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet on Wednesday.
Defending 436 in the fourth innings, the hosts needed only three wickets to win the match with 121 more runs in hand.
Taijul Islam led the show with the ball as he took six wickets in the innings, including two on the final day to set up the win. Bangladesh have now registered their first-ever Test sweep over Pakistan at home, having also beaten them in the previous Test. Moreover, Bangladesh had also swept Pakistan 2-0 in the away series in 2024.
Shanto's impressive rise as captain has now made him the most successful captain of Bangladesh as he went past Mushfiqur Rahim with the second Test win. He now has eight victories in 18 Tests, while the veteran Mushfiqur had tallied seven in 34 matches.
After the match in the post-match conference, Shanto said that Bangladesh's four straight Test wins against Pakistan is the biggest achievement so far in the country's cricket history.
The win marked another major milestone for Bangladesh, who secured four successive Test series victories for the first time in their history.
"So far, this is our biggest achievement," Shanto said after the historic win.
The Bangladesh skipper also believes the team can achieve even greater success in the future.
"But I believe Bangladesh will play many more Test matches in the future and hopefully achieve even greater things," he stated.
"Overall, I would say these four matches were very special and we played very good cricket. But as I always say, we still need to gradually build this Test team," he added.
Shanto also stressed that Bangladesh still have several areas to improve in order to become a consistently strong side in the longer format.
"There are many areas where we need to improve, and we have to address those properly. When we can perform consistently well both at home and away, then I will say this team has truly become better than before," he concluded.
