Bangladesh boosts export cargo screening at two airports

Bangladesh has significantly expanded its export cargo security screening capacity with the reinstatement of Explosive Detection Dog (EDD) screening for UK-bound cargo at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA)  and the launch of a second EDS machine in Sylhet.
The developments would strengthen the country's export cargo security system in line with international standards while enhancing direct cargo transportation efficiency to the United Kingdom and European destinations, said a press release by the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) on Sunday, reports BSS.

With the reinstatement of EDD approval at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, direct UK-bound export cargo can now again be screened using Explosive Detection Dog methods alongside Explosive Detection System (EDS), X-ray and Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) technologies. The CAAB said that the move would make cargo screening faster, more reliable and cost-effective, reducing the risk of delays and additional security checks for exporters.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) had temporarily suspended approval for EDD screening of UK-bound cargo in 2021.

CAAB said the approval was restored following continuous diplomatic and technical coordination with the DfT and European Union experts.
Meanwhile, export cargo screening operations at Osmani International Airport in Sylhet have gained significant momentum with the installation of a second Explosive Detection System (EDS).

CAAB said the additional EDS would substantially increase screening capacity, reduce cargo processing time and ensure smoother and uninterrupted export operations from Sylhet. Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport obtained 3rd Country EU Aviation Security Validated Regulated Agent (RA3) Validation in 2017.

, enabling direct export cargo transportation to the European Union and the United Kingdom under internationally approved screening procedures.
Osmani International Airport achieved RA3 Validation in 2021 and resumed regular cargo operations in April 2025 after a temporary suspension.
The enhanced screening facilities are encouraging more airlines to seek Air Carrier Carrying Air Cargo and Mail from Third Country Airport to European Countries (ACC3) Validation, which would further expand Bangladesh's direct cargo transportation capacity and support international trade growth, said the release.
