Policy for disaster displaced people demanded

Rights groups sought an integrated 'Internal Displacement Policy' in the upcoming Five Year Plan to ensure proper rehabilitation of the people displaced by climate change and natural disaster. They also deplored Kalyanpur Slum eviction claiming that 90 percent of the slum dwellers were climate refugees. They made the remark while addressing a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in the capital on Tuesday. Around 27 non-governmental organizations jointly organized the program. Mustafa Kamal Akand of EquityBD placed the other demands on behalf of the organizers which include assigning a national organization for data collection on climate displaced people, drafting effective and sustainable plans, proposing vocational and skill development training, city policies to absorb climate refugees and ensuring water and sanitation services for them.It is estimated that one of each five person of Bangladesh will be climate migrant by 2050, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of EquityBD said at the program adding that around 35 percent people of Dhaka are currently living in slums.He also narrated that 90 percent city slum dwellers were the victim of either climate change, or displaced by natural disaster.  Prodip Kumar Roy Online Knowledge Society said that Bangladesh couldn't be a middle income country without putting the slum dwellers in mainstream economy."If we want international support for climate displaced as we have been demanding in different global climate conferences, we will have to establish good example within our country," he opined.
ASM Badrul Alam of Bangladesh Krishak Federation, Shafikul Islam of Bangalesh Krishak Federation, Rafiqul Islam Pothik of Gono Forum, Foyez Ahmed of Jatyo Sromik Federation, Firoza Begum of Jago Nari, Aminur Rasul Babul of Unnayan Dhara Trust were also present among others.
