Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday urged the private sector entrepreneurs to play more proactive roles to further accelerate the country's economic growth.The minister was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the month-long Bangladesh International Trade and Export Fair-2017 (BITEF-2017) held under the auspices of Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CMCCI) at Halishahar Garibe Newaz School field on Friday morning.
With CMCCI President Khalilur Rahman in the chair, the inaugural function was addressed, among others, by former minister Dr Afsarul Ameen, MP, Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury, MP, Fair Committee Chairman Anisurzzaman Bhuiyan and A K M Mahbub Chow-dhury. The commerce minister said despite many limitations, Bangladesh made significant advancements in export earning and health, agriculture and education sectors in the last five years.
He asked the entrepreneurs to supplement the government's efforts to build a self-sufficient economy. Tofail criticized the past BNP-led government for failing to generate a single megawatt of electricity and said the Awami League-led government produced over 16,000 megawatt electricity.
He said the government is working relentlessly to ensure a conducive and corruption-free business atmosphere in the country. The minister urged all to become united for strengthening the hands of Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina. Organizers said over 200 stalls, including 10 mega pavilions, eight medium pavilions and 18 standard pavilions and eight banks and insurance outlets have been set up at the fair.
