The Bangladesh Sangskritik Mukti Jote, a political party, called upon the government to declare December 14 as a public holiday to commemorate the martyred intellectuals who were killed on this day in 1971 by the Pakistan Army.The demand was made at a press conference of the party held at the National Press Club in the city yesterday noon.
The written statement of the party was read out by Md Serajul Islam, Chief of Standing Committee of the party. The statement narrating the awes and sufferings of the people during the war of independence called for declaring the 14th December as a public holiday.
On that day in 1971, the prominent intellectuals of the country were killed brutally and gunned down in Dhaka. The party leaders and the supporters will hand over a memorandum to the Prime Minister on December 10 stating their demand.
