Disaster preparedness programs emphasized


Speakers emphasized the need for expediting disaster preparedness programs among the people and making them well equipped for lowering the risk of natural calamities in the country.They said this at a day-long roundtable conference on disaster preparedness was held on Wednesday. Chhinnomul Mohila Samity (SMS), a reputed NGO, organized the conference in cooperation with ELNA project of SKS Foundation and Oxfam Bangladesh, reports BSS.

DC Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the conference as the chief guest and civil surgeon Dr. Abdus Shakur, deputy director of Department of Agricu-lture Extension AKM Ruhul Amin, additional police super Abdullah Al Faruk were present as the special guests.

Moderated by district relief and rehabilitation officer AKM Idris Ali, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by district livestock officer Dr Abdul Latif, executive engineer of Department of Public Health Engine-ering Aminul Islam Chowdhury, deputy director of Department of Family Planning Dewan Morshed Kamal, district primary education officer Aminul Islam Mondal, DD of Department of Youth Department Tofael Ahmed, extension officer of BWDB Shafiqur Rahman and journalist Sarker M. Shahiduz-zaman.

The speakers said flood, river erosion, cold wave and drought are the main natural calamities of the district and every year the disasters visited the district creating untold sufferings of the people.In recent years, earth quake, one of the major hazards, had also been newly added to the fleet of the disaster making the people of the northern region of the country more worried, they said.

DC emphasized for disseminating information, education, training and knowledge among the rural people, who living in the disaster-prone areas, to reduce disaster-losses and subsequent efficient management systems.The DC also underscored the need for creating much awareness among the people.
