Cultural Affairs Minsiter Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, in Rangpur on Sunday said the citizens should pay appropriate VAT and taxes in order to build a self-reliant nation for the future generations in our own interest. "The urgent need of the time is to strengthen our national economy through increasing revenue earning of the government for speeding up national development in spirit of the War of Liberation," Noor said at a post-rally discussion here as the chief guest.
The Divisional Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate organised the discussion at Zila Parishad Community Centre in the city in observance of the National VAT Day- 2017. Crests and citations were also distributed on the occasion among the top 17 VAT payers of different business establishments, factories and industries of all eight districts and authorities of ten chamber of commerce and industries under Rangpur division.
Earlier, VC of Begum Rokeya University Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah led a huge rally with participation of officials, employees, businesspersons, VAT payers, civil society members and local elite in the city streets. With Divisional Commi-ssioner of Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate Mohammad Ahsanul Haque in the chair, Divisi-onal Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed, Zila Parisahd Chairman Advo-cate Chhafia Khanom, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduz-zaman, Police Super Mizanur Rahman, Rang-pur Chamber President Mostafa Sohrab Chowdh-ury Titu and best VAT-payer Emdadul Haque Bharsha, addressed the occasion as special guests.
A number of the highest VAT payers from all over Rangpur division also addressed the function. Taking part in the discussion, the speakers laid emphasis on creating awareness among the businesspersons and consumers to inspire them in paying value added tax (VAT) and other taxes properly for further strengthening of the national economy.
