(Inset) Police offered guard of honor after the janaza. -AA ABM Mohiuddin was offered a minister-ship but the politician rejected the offer for simple reason that he did not want to leave Chittagong-the place where he was born and brought up. The refusal might have made the Awami League high-ups a little bit unhappy, however, Mohiuddin proved his worth in the long-run staying at the port city.
Recalling the former mayor of Chittagong City ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury's love for the Chittagong region, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said, "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed Mohiuddin to be a minister, but he rejected the offer opting to stay here in Chittagong."
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, MP, went to the Mohiuddin's Chasma Hill residence at Sholoshore in the port city on Friday morning. He prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
Former City Mayor Manjurul Alam said Mohiuddin Chowdhury was a pride of Chittagong and a leader of the mass people of the region. "Today, the vacancy which has been created with the death of this people's leader is irrevocable."
Chittagong Develop-ment Authority (CDA) Chairman Abdus Salam said, "I am fortunate that I did politics with him. He was not only a politician but he was also our guardian. He raised his voice against all injustice and used to think about the betterment of the peoples of Chittagong. We pray for his departed soul."
Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said Mohiuddin was the leader of neglected Chittagong. With his bold initiatives he fulfilled many aspirations of the people of Chittagong. People of Chittagong lost their guardian with the death of the great leader, he said.
People from all walks of life, leaders of different political parties, their front organizations and professional bodies rushed to his Chasma Hill residence and paid their last tribute to Mohiuddin. Later his body was kept at AL party office in the city on Friday afternoon.
Meanwhile, leaders of city AL, Chittagong south and north districts, its front organizations, city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and former Minister Afsarul Amin, MP visited his residence yesterday morning.
Veteran Awami League leader and Chittagong city unit President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury breathed his last around 3 am on Friday morning at a hospital in the port city. He was 74.
The former city mayor and most loved political leader of the region, had been suffering from heart and kidney complications for long. He was put on life support at Max Hospital at Mehedibagh in the port city on Thursday evening.
His namaz-e-janaza was held after Asr prayers on the historic Laldigi Maidan in the port city and buried at his family graveyard at city's Chasma Hill.
