Rain likely on Eid day -The Asian Age

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast rain on Eid-ul-Adha, caused by the ongoing monsoon winds and a low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which may dampen festivities.

Although the monsoon season is technically over, the seasonal winds are still active.

Some parts of the country experienced heat waves in the first few days of the Bangla month of Bhadra, but rain since Monday has brought some respite from the unpleasant heat. Meteorologists expect the rain to continue for the next few days.

Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Adha on Wednesday. Muslims will attend Eid prayers that morning and sacrifice animals in the traditional Korbani ritual.

Though morning rains may hamper the prayer service and sacrifices, rain in the afternoon is often welcomed on Eid day as it washes away the waste left after the animals are slaughtered.

A low pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the coast which may get intensify, Senior Meteorologist Abdul Mannan told bdnews24.com.

“It has already been raining in various parts of the country and may rain more on Wednesday, Eid day, if this continues. In that case, the southern part of the country, especially Khulna, Barishal, Sylhet and Chattogram may face light to medium rainfall.”

Some areas may also experience heavy rain, the Meteorological Department said.

It is likely to rain at some point during Eid day in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Dhaka, said Abdul Mannan, adding that Dhaka may only experience light rain in the morning of Eid day, which will not cause much trouble.

The Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports have been instructed to hoist local signal no. 3 as gusty winds are expected due to the low pressure over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal. The signal will be taken down if the situation improves on Tuesday.

The highest temperature in the country was 35.9 degree Celsius in Sylhet on Monday. The highest rainfall, 80mm, was recorded at Nikli, Kishoreganj.

Most parts of Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh and the Rangpur division and some parts of Rajshahi division may have light to medium rain with gusty wind or rain with thunder lightning, according to the weather forecast for Tuesday.

Some parts of the country may also experience heavy downpours which may increase in the following 48 hours, it added.
