Awami League (AL) nominated mayoral candidate for by-polls of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam yesterday formally kicked off his campaign in the city.
Atiqul Islam, noted business of the country, is contesting the DNCC by-polls slated for March 28 with AL's election symbol 'Boat'. He started electioneering by offering ziarat at the Shrine of Shah Kabir (R) in the city's Uttarkhan area in the morning.
The AL mayoral candidate also offered ziarat at the Shrine of Hazrat Shah Ali at 1 pm and johr's prayers in the city's Mirpur area. In the first day of his election campaign, Atiqul attended a discussion organized by Dhaka City North Jatiya Shramik League in Vatara Police Station area in the city.
Later, he joined a meeting with the leaders of Shop Owners Society of Uttara at Rajlaxmi complex in the evening. During campaign, the ruling AL backed mayoral candidate urged the people for casting their votes for him and vowed to transform the DNCC into a model city.The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30, 2017.
On January 9 last year, the EC had declared the schedule of the DNCC by-polls and elections to the new wards, setting February 26 for voting.The polls were not held as the High Court stayed the election schedule for six months. On January 16 this year, the HC cleared the way for holding the polls.
