Layoff spree in RMG sector on -The Asian Age

IndustriALL Bangladesh Council has demanded reinstating workers and withdrawal of cases against workers who allegedly were laid off and being persecuted for their involvement in salary hike movement during December-January last. The demand was raised from a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday.

"The owners began layoff fest soon after the agitation ended and filed a number of false and fabricated lawsuits," the speakers at the press briefing said. "There are 34 cases so far filed accusing 3500 readymade garment workers at Savar, Ashulia and Gazipur. More than 100 workers have been arrested while scores were fired showing numerous allegations against them." "This is unprecedented in this sector," they said.claiming the workers were being persecuted which was totally unexpected.

"Suspending or blacklisting any individual or a group suddenly is a sheer violation of human rights," they said putting forward some demands. Those are - releasing the detained workers, cancelation of all cases, reinstating the workers at their respective workstations and ending harassment in the name of fixing production target.

The platform chairman Gias Uddin Ahmed, secretary general Salahuddin Swapan, senior vice chairman Amirul Haque Amin, former secretary general Touhidur Rahman and central leader Najma Akter were present among others.
