Dhaka University (DU) teachers have demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits who set Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi on fire and burnt her to death. From a demonstration on the campus yesterday, they said they will take to the street again if the family of the victim does not get justice.
DU Prof Md Lutfor Rahaman said the whole nation wants the justice. "But if we look back to our history, most of the sensational cases are in limbo. We are confined by the vicious circle of impunity." Justice for Nusrat will break the loop free, the professor urged the PM.
Prof MM Akash meantime appreciated the deceased student saying she fought till death for justice. "If you don't punish the perpetrators by exemplary punishment, we will come and stand here again," said.
The Economics Department Prof held Sonagazi OC responsible for the video went viral in social media. He said if the victim got justice in the first place, the tragic death could have been averted."We are happy as the OC is closed. However, it's not satisfactory. Why he did not accept the case upon receiving the complaint?"
"When a girl is set on fire, we can realize how barbaric the surroundings are even in today's modern era," Prof Dr Sanzida Akhter of Women and Gender Studies Department noted adding if the society fails to ensure security for women in and outside of the residence, noting would be fruitful.
Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Professor Dr Kaberi Gayen reminded the High Court order in 2010 which directed to form anti-sexual harassment cell at every institution. "We appreciate the observation and now urge the government to turn it into law," she concluded.
