Agroup of 20-30 miscreants smuggling cattle from India allegedly attacked theBorder Security Force (BSF) search-cum-patrolling team along theChapainawabganj border in the early hours of Monday.
"Thesmugglers paid no heed to the warning of BSF personnel and aggressivelyattacked them with sharp lethal weapons near Border Pillar N. 178," said astatement of the force received in Dhaka.
Itsaid the BSF personnel fired two rounds of non-lethal pump action gun inself-defense. Instead of being dispersed, the smugglers became more aggressiveand intensified their attack on the patrolling team, it added.
"Sensingimminent danger to their lives, the BSF personnel fired two rounds of personalweapon to disperse the smugglers," the statement said.
Themiscreants fled to Bangladesh by taking advantage of darkness and bad weatherconditions on the international border, it said.
Meanwhile, the othermembers of patrolling party reached the spot. On searching the area, onesmuggler was found dead and one BSF constable Ziaul Haque was grievouslyinjured on his left arm and on the back of his head.
