A judge denied Harvey Weinstein's request to be allowed to travel to Europe prior to standing trial for rape. According to Deadline, Weinstein's lawyers sought to allow the former producer to travel abroad from August 12 through August 22 to work as a consultant on a stage production of Cinema Paradiso, a 1988 film he produced. The trip would've involved in-person meetings in both Italy and Spain, but the request was quickly turned down. Weinstein's lawyers argued that he was being treated unfairly. "
A secretive review into the union movement's federal election campaign has highlighted that it had the right policy ideas but the wrong slogan. The review, conducted by Evan Moorhead, a former Queensland state Labor MP, and its recommendations were unanimously endorsed at a two-day Australian Council of Trade Unions executive meeting. The executive resolved to continue its political campaign, despite criticism from within the movement that they should refocus on workplace organizing and the charge that it failed to eject the Morrison government despite spending between $17m and $25m.
An Australian farming group has called for a fully funded national strategy to deal with climate change and agriculture, warning farmers don't have enough support to manage increasing risks associated with global heating. It comes as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report on climate change and land, released in Geneva on Thursday, found limiting global heating to below 2C can only be achieved by reducing emissions from all sectors - including land and food. That will involve transforming food production and land management, given agriculture, forestry and other types of land use account for 23% of human-induced greenhouse emissions globally.
