Hunt for Bangladesh head coach continues -The Asian Age

There is only one question now on everyone's lips: who will be Bangladesh's Head coach? All eyes on former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson, one of the strong candidates in the race for the vacant Bangladesh head coach's post. New Zealand's one of the successful Coaches was supposed to arrive in Dhaka on Friday to give interview to BCB but he is expected to visit Bangladesh after Eid vacation.

But the fact is, Bangladesh who are willingly interested to get Hesson, has a slim chance to hire him as neighbouring country India alongside Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka are also in talk with Hesson.

With Bangladesh alongside Pakistan and Sri Lanka recently axed their Head Coach while Ravi Shastri's tenure with Team India will come to an end after the ongoing tour of West Indies and England's world cup winning Coach Trevor Bayliss is all set to step down after Ashes, the door has become wide open for the high profile coaches.

Rumours are galore that Chandika Hathurusingha is one of the strong candidates in the race for the vacant Bangladesh head coach's post. Hathurusingha, who coached Bangladesh from 2014 to 2017, is understood to be a favorite of the BCB president and some administrators, despite the fact that he give up to take up the Sri Lanka job in October 2017. But according to several Media personals, most of the BCB directors are not interested to rehire Hathurusingha.

During Chandika's three-year stint as Bangladesh coach, Tigers pulled off some famous victories at their own backyard but most of the credit should be given to captain Mashrafe Mortaza and Co and their spirit of cricket. But some cricketers were badly treated in his era.

Bangladesh had an abysmal performance in South Africa tour in 2017 and Hathurusinghe steped down as Bangladesh coach in the halfway of the tour, leaving things turned so bad for Bangladesh team. Chandika also sprung many surprises during his service as Sri Lanka Coach. Sri Lanka's first choice captain Angelo Mathews' exclusion from the Asia Cup squad in 2018 was one of the surprises.

Test specialist Dimuth Karunaratne, who did not play a single one-day international match since World Cup 2015, was given the role of leadership for Sri Lanka during World Cup. As a result Sri Lanka faced an early exit from the champion race. Veteran Dinesh Chandimal was also overlooked in Sri Lanka's world Cup squad.

According to various sources, Chandika himself ruined his Coaching image. With his regarding issues with Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) and previous frosty relationship with several Bangladeshi senior cricketers, most of the cricketers and BCB directors are unwilling to rehire him. But he is still in the limelight as he is still in BCB's plan!

According to the source, Mike Hesson is BCB's first choice. BCB is also in talk with other high profiles like Mahela Jayawardene, Tom Moody, Mickey Arthur and Flower brothers (Andy and Grant). If BCB finally fail to pick Hesson or other strong candidates only then they can contact with Chandika.

The Bangladesh head coach position has been vacant since Steve Rhodes' time as Bangladesh head coach came to an end following the team's eighth-place finish at the World Cup. After that, Bangladesh played a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka without a designated head coach. Khaled Mahmud was given the role of interim head coach for the Sri Lanka series but Bangladesh had a nightmare tour in Sri Lanka under the stand-in captain Tamim Iqbal, facing 3-0 whitewash.

Recently former South Africa coach Russell Domingo gave interview to BCB President Nazmul Hasan Papon. But Domingo is interested in coaching the developmental squads in Bangladesh. BCB has already appointed former South Africa pacer Charl Langeveldt as the pace bowling coach of Bangladesh while Daniel Vettori was appointed the spin coach.
