The first death due to mosquito-borne dengue has been reported in Bandarban district. Deceased Domaching Marma Baby, 32, was the wife of Uhlaching Marma, chairman of Ruma Upazila and president of the upazila unit Awami League.

Baby died at a private hospital in Chattogram around 4:30am on Thursday. Shoi Lha Ching Marma, a relative of the woman, said she was diagnosed with dengue at Ruma Upazila Health Complex. Later, she was shifted to Bandarban Sadar Hospital.

She was admitted to a private hospital in Chattogram as her condition deteriorated. Bangladesh has been grappling with a massive outbreak of dengue this year. Dhaka, its densely-populated capital city, is at the centre of the outbreak.

Since January, 78,617 people had been hospitalised with dengue and 75,225 of them made full recovery, the government said. At present, more than 3,100 patients are being treated at hospitals. Although the number of new dengue cases is declining, reports of deaths related to the mosquito-borne disease continue to come in.
