Varsity student brings success by farming watermelon -The Asian Age

A university student of Daudkandi upazila has brought success by cultivating year-round watermelon. The student, Md Nuruddin Ahmed is a honors third year student of Government Titumir College affiliated with the the University of Dhaka. He was passing lazy time as the university was closed due to corona pandemic. The enterprising youth cultivated watermelon in his 4 decimals land with the help from Daudkandi Upazila Agriculture Department.

Coming to know about the matter, Daudkandi Upazila Chairman Major (retd) Mohammad Ali visited the successful youth on Monday. Upazila Chairman Major (retd) Mohammad Ali said, "Somebody has gained success in cultivating year-round watermelon in mancha method in Daudkandi for the first time. Nuruhuddin is not a professional farmer, he is a student. Due to corona, his university is closed. He has taken this initiative following the government's directive to bring every inch of land under cultivation."

The upazila chairman said, "If watermelon is cultivated in mancha method, the amount of damage in rainy season is less. There are also opportunities to benefit at a lower cost. It cost him Tk 6,000 to cultivate the 4 decimals land. In the meantime, 350 watermelons are in full grown for sale. If he gets a good price, he can earn Tk 30,000 to 35,000 for selling the watermelons."

Nuruddin further said, "If other youth like him come forward to involve them in farming, I will provide them all out support." Md Nuruddin Ahmed said, "I came home when my university was declared closed due to coronavirus. I was spending lazy time. Suddenly one day I saw on YouTube, watermelon can be cultivated in untimely manner in mancha method. Without wasting time, I started to initiative to cultivate watermelon in uncultivated land next to my house." 

He said, "I have become success in cultivating year-round watermelon with the overall cooperation from Upazila Agriculture Officer and other concerned." Sarowar Jahan, Daudkandi Upazila Agriculture Officer, said, "The young entrepreneur Md Nuruddin Ahmed has started cultivating year-round watermelon in his 4 decimals land. He started to cultivate watermelon in last September."

Now, the watermelon is fully grown for selling. Each fruit weights around 3 to 4 kgs.
