Mayor concerned over water-logging -The Asian Age

The people of Chittagong cannot be freed from water-logging due to the negligence of the concerned authorities including the Chittagong City Corporation.  Even, during the monsoon rain here in Chittagong, people are suffering from water-logging now. The sufferings of Wednesday and Thursday's monsoon rain brought untold sufferings for the city dwellers.

Despite the incumbent Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation Alhaj AJM Nasir Uddin committed to the Chittagong people for making them free from sufferings of water-logging, in the last two years, he could do nothing. Moreover, locals and also the leaders of Bangladesh Awami League including the president of City Awami League Alhaj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury also alleged that mayor is engaged in his business and making swimming pool at outer stadium.

Sources said, low-lying areas of the port city including Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali, and Chaktai have gone under knee-deep water following the torrential rains for several hours. So, the inhabitants of those low-lying areas remained stranded for inundation.

Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation Alhaj AJM Nasir Uddin visited the Halishahar and Agrabad area during the rain yesterday. He expressed his concern over the uncontrolled water-logging and said the journalists that he is very sorry for water-logging.

He said, "It is fact that water-logging is a long time problem in Chittagong. But, as a mayor I am yet to be able to control the water-logging."  "If the master plan of Chittagong be implemented, the problem is likely to be removed. But, the tenure of master plan has ended last year without implementation. Moreover, only Chittagong City Corporation can not remove the problem of water logging," he said.

He further said, "After taking the charge, it is the second rainy season. I am taking plan to make the people of Chittagong free from water-logging problem."  He also said, "We need comprehensive plan to solve the problem. We are planning to work with World Bank in this connection."
