Help curb noise pollution: Manju -The Asian Age

Describing sound pollution as a great threat for environment and public health, Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hossain Manju urged the city dwellers to be active to check it. Addressing a rally yesterday, he also lamented that although permission is required for any program that may create sound pollution, many do not pay any heed to it.

The Department of Environment (DoE) arranged the rally titled 'Sound Awareness Rally' in front of MPs' Hostel at Manik Mia Avenue marking the International Noise Awareness Day. The noise awareness day is observed on the last Wednesday of April every year.

The minister also inaugurated a signpost of silence area at the intersection between Manik Mia Avenue and Mirpur Road. Deputy Minister for Environment and Forests Abdullah Al Islam Jakob said horn of vehicles, construction work and sound of factories are mainly responsible for noise pollution in the city. "Those are creating the sound pollution are also its victims." The government is implementing various programs to control the noise pollution, he said. DoE DG Md Raisul Alam Mondal said they have already distributed sound level metres.
