Quader briefs chief justice on party's stance -The Asian Age
Amid the ruling Awami League's criticism over the top court's 16th constitutional amendment verdict, the party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader has met Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.
Quader, also the road transport minister, went to the chief justice's residence on Saturday night to brief the party's stance, his ministry has confirmed.
"He met the chief justice and briefed him on the Awami League's stance over the observations made in the verdict," the ministry's Senior Information Officer Abu Naser told bdnews24.com.
"The minister said they will have further discussions," he said citing Quader.
The 16th Amendment to Constitution empowered parliament to sack top court judges on the grounds of misconduct and incompetence.
Last year, the High Court declared the amendment ‘illegal’ and the decision was upheld on Jul 3 by the Appellate Division. The full verdict was finally released by the Supreme Court on Aug 1.
The ruling party has criticised the verdict, but the BNP describes it as historic.
On Sunday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir described Quader's meeting as 'worrying' and blamed the government of trying to pile pressure on Justice Sinha.
